Decision Of Word Meaning In Technical English Translation-A Study In The Perspective Of Cognitive Theory

This thesis discusses the decision of word meaning in technical English translation from the perspective of cognitive theory. The author studies the theories of the scholars of cognition, relevance and translation in the field of word meaning decision of English translation and technical English translation. In fact all the theories are closely related with cognition.Examples are used to discuss, from the perspective of cognitive theory, how context influences word meaning in general English. How context influences word meaning is discussed in technical English in details. By classifying the vocabulary used in technical English into different categories, the problem of correct decision of word meaning is analyzed.Four strategies of decision of word meaning in technical English translation are suggested. The strategies are based on constructing the cognitive model from the visiting the factory, getting information from other sources, interviewing with the insiders and the translator's experience, so that the correct decision of word meaning can be realized.
