Poetry, which can be deemed as the essence of Chinese culture, occupies a position of significance in the development of literature. The beauty of classical metrical poetry is embodied in its sound, form and sense. How to reproduce those beauties is always a challenge for translators.Poetry translation is one of the most difficult jobs in the field of translation, especially the classical metrical poetry translation from Chinese to English. As the precious treasure of Chinese history and culture, the Chinese poetic language is extremely terse and implicit. Therefore, translators strive to find a way to clearly reproduce the original beauty of the poetry in English. This thesis consists of five chapters and tends to depict the criterion of"Three Beauties"for translating CMP into English. It starts from analyzing main features of English and Chinese metrical poetry respectively and making a comparison between them. A brief historical review of the principles and criteria of CMP translation and three different schools of Chinese poetry translation and their representatives are introduced. The second part of the thesis illustrates the criterion of"Three Beauties"from three aspects– beauty in sound, in form and in sense. After a detailed study of the criterion, the thesis argues that the criterion of"Three Beauties"should be followed in poetry translation as the general criterion for CMP translation. The exploration of the general principle acts as an indispensable preparation for the more carefully analytic approach of the next chapter. In the last chapter, a case study of the translation of Jiangxue explains the general application and value of the criterion of"Three Beauties"."Three Beauties"principle is a standard criterion used to guide, evaluate and criticize poetry translation.
