English writing is one of the four basic language skills of English learning, which is always a weak aspect of English teaching and learning. This thesis reviews the latest achievements in writing teaching in recent years both at home and abroad, and the current writing teaching situation and the requirements of college English teaching, then applies the Interactive Language Teaching to college English writing teaching, that is to say, interaction is fully embodied in the process of writing, through which there are teacher-student, student-student, and teacher-student group interaction in each writing process. The traditional teacher-centered way of teaching has been turned into student-centered. In this way, not only have the students raised their awareness of participation, but also generated their interests in learning English writing. In order to identify the effectiveness of the application of the interactive language teaching in the teaching of college English writing, an experiment was conducted. The experiment was designed as a comparative study involving one experimental group, which adopted interactive writing model and one controlled group which followed the traditional way of teaching writing. Before the experiment, the author chose two classes of 89 students from a same college in Changsha as the subjects. In order to get some information about the current writing situation, a survey about the students'writing attitudes, interest and writing habits was conducted before the experiment. The whole experiment lasted for 14 weeks. The research instruments used in this study include their English scores of the last final examination, a prewriting test and a post writing test as well as two questionnaires before and after the experiment. The statistical techniques employed for analysis are descriptive statistics, Independent Sample T-test,Paired and Sample T-test. The study attempts to answer the following questions:1. Is interactive writing teaching more effective to the students'writing proficiency compared with the traditional product-based writing teaching?2. Will the interactive writing teaching stimulate the learners'interests and build up their confidence in writing?3. What's the students'attitude towards interactive writing teaching in the experimental group? The result of the experiment shows that the students in the experimental group benefited from the interactive writing model, for the independent sample t-test indicates that there is a significant difference between the writing scores of the control and the experimental classes after the post writing test, while there is not a significant improvement in the writing achievement test of the control group. The paired sample t-test shows that there is a significant difference in the writing achievement of the experimental group under the interactive writing model. The result of the questionnaire indicates that the students show active attitude towards the interactive writing model, that is to say, the teacher-student, student-student interaction help improve students'interest and self-confidence, and reduce their writing anxiety. Teachers should attach importance to the application of interactive language teaching in English writing instruction, while the students should be given enough direction and do more training so that they can understand the aims and participate in the writing process so as to get better results in writing. In a word, this study is a useful attempt to resolve the low efficiency of the current college English writing teaching from a new perspective and creates a new way—the teacher-student, student-student interaction in the writing teaching. However, there are various limitations in the research, for example, the experiment only lasted for one semester, and the number of the participants is not large enough, so similar studies with large scale and a longer time will be expected in later studies.
