The nocturne,as one style of music, was introduced for the first time by Irish composer, pianist John Field into his composition.John's nocturnes were characterized by its sentimentality in content, tranquility in temper, and conciseness in form.In the course of the development of nocturne,it's Chopin,Frédéric Francois(1810-1849),the polish composer, who evolved the nocturne into one kind of music good at expressing deep feelings and rich in theatricality, thus making nocturnes his own representative and charming music style. The dissertation seeks to probe into its characteristics of "theatricality" by combing Chopin's nocturne scores and textual materials. The dissertation focuses on the following aspects to analyze Chopin's nocturne theatricality in a theorized way, namely, nocturne's origins, its characteristics,Chopin's inheritance and contribution to it,and social factors of its theatricality, characteristics, and concrete playing techniques.Chopin not only broadened the scope of the nocturne, but also exploited new ways to make it more expressive and novel. The study on the theatricality of Chopin's nocturnes is not just a purely theoretical one,but in an extent it's more about a practical showing. The author seeks to make performer understand Chopin's nocturne further and grasp its style with an aim to showing them more skillfully by analyzing the characteristics of Chopin's nocturnes.
