Romance novel written by QiongYao was introduced into Chinese Mainland during the 1980s and it immediately gained enormous popularity among people of all ages and a lasting "QiongYao fever" began to emerge. In 1988, QiongYao traveled back to the Mainland to visit relatives, everywhere she went, even on the train or ship, she enjoyed warm and generous welcome. QiongYao's fans included different sectors of society, from painters, artists, calligraphers, down to drivers and factory workers. Obviously, by that time, QiongYao had rapidly and completely occupied the market of popular literature in Chinese Mainland and become a prominent figure in the area. Before that time, the literature policy in the Mainland had just finished its transformation from "serving politics" to "serving people." The libraries and bookstores were full of serious works which become a powerful tool of education for teachers and parents because of its educational significance. Love stories as well as love itself were still a forbidden area in literature. Readers were especially familiar with "the red classics" and the typical "political heroes" depicted in it. Moreover, along with the social, political, and economic development, literature and literature appreciation made remarkable progress and showed a variety of interesting tendencies. People would like to know more about the outside world, especially Taiwan, which had been secluded from the Chinese mainland because of political reasons. And just at this time, the novel by QiongYao was introduced and served as a channel for people to understand Taiwan's society and culture. However, the readers of QiongYao's novels are not fixed. Generally speaking, most readers of QiongYao's novels are mainly young people, especially young girls who are usually naive and begin to feel the awakening of love and most importantly, their vision of love are full of fantasy. QiongYao creates one and another "love myth" for young men and women and we should recognize that her novels have achieved a high artistic level. Therefore her novels are able to attract large number of young readers. However, the value system, moral outlook and aesthetic orientations reflected in her novels are slow poison for young people.QiongYao's novels convey an important concept - true love is established on the basis of love at first sight. As we know, love and marriage must be based on mutual understanding. In real life love at first sight is fragile because lovers have to go through the long and necessary process of mutual understanding before they get married and start a happy marital life. QiongYao fully approves the mode of love at first sight but this will certainly have a negative impact on young boys and girls. The supremacy of love permeates all the novels by QiongYao. Through reading, we can clearly see that every main character in QiongYao's novels regards love as the centre of life. Facing obstacles and difficulties in love, their world would tumble down, and they even commit suicide. This attitude will misguide the young people and leave them caught up in love and forget their responsibilities and duties as a member of society. In QiongYao's novels, we often find a young lady falling in love with an old man who is superior to any ordinary young man in terms of education, temperament and achievement. This freakish love is fully understood and approved in her novels, which may bring about unhealthy opinions of love and marriage among young people. QiongYao's novels also reflect deep sympathy and full support of extramarital lovers. Although the fate of those lovers demonstrates the author's psychology in different stages in her life, we must admit that this supportive attitude to extramarital affairs may imperceptibly influence young people's attitude to love and marriage.Although the main character of QiongYao's novels are mostly well-educated college students and intellectuals, but in many novels we can find the influence of the author's failure in her school life—not being admitted by university, for the characters in the novels often criticize school education from different aspects, especially university education. This reflects the author's negative attitude to school education. It can't be denied that some people may realize their dreams through certain specialties, but for most people, the only way to get achievement is through formal school education. Therefore, the view of school education reflected in QiongYao's novels is absolutely undesirable. To some extent, QiongYao's novels show a disregard of chastity. In her kingdom of love, readers can often find young girls who lose their virginity on the basis of love. The existence of so many illegitimate children does no good to young readers who haven't fully developed.QiongYao's novel doesn't take history seriously, especially the history of Qing Dynasty. A literary work with history as its background can not only help people to understand the characteristics of time when a special historical event happened, but also provide a channel for people to understand the social life, value system and codes of conduct of the time when the work was written. But we cannot get any real knowledge about history through reading QiongYao's novel. Without the necessary knowledge about history, readers, especially young readers are likely to lose right historical consciousness. In short, the value system and outlook on life people accept when they are young have a significant influence on their life in the future. Fortunately, we have entered an electronic age with diverse information. In this new era, QiongYao's novel is not the only choice for young readers. Therefore, although it still exists and has some readers, the harm it may does to young people has been greatly reduced.
