| This thesis attempts to study deixis from a cognitive perspective and aims to offering adequate explanation to problems arising in the traditional pragmatic account of deixis within the framework of cognitive linguistics.A qualitative analysis is employed to analyze the collected examples of deixis and through summarizing the problems in the traditional studies and applying cognitive theories in the analysis, the significance of studying deixis and the explicative power of cognitive theories and models are suggested. It is proposed that deixis is a graded linguistic category structured around an ICM along the scale of prototypicality. Space deixis is the central concept of deixis category, and the conceptualization of deixis is carried out through the mapping of physical space; and meaning construction of deictic phenomenon is realized by building mental spaces and blending.
