English cyberspeak has been expanding rapidly and gaining currency, due to the wide spread of the Internet. The same is true of online English - Chinese dictionaries with more and more Chinese having access to the Internet and recognizing the need to understand English cyberspeak. The purpose of the thesis is to achieve efficient representation of cyberspeak labeling in online English - Chinese dictionaries, for dictionary labels provide a practical guide to the understanding and use of language. To this end, the thesis adopts theoretical research, empirical analysis and comparative analysis to describe English cyberspeak from linguistic perspectives, to provide classification of dictionary labels and ultimately to integrate the study results together.The major contribution of the thesis is the construction of an efficient representation model for English cyberspeak labeling, for the sake of making online English - Chinese dictionaries a better learning tool. The thesis also furthers the study and understanding of English cyberspeak and launches a tentative classification scheme for dictionary labels. In addition to the specific results achieved, the originality and innovation embodied throughout the thesis provide valuable insight for others in the same area of research.
