This thesis mainly states the conception of a CD-ROM association dictionary.Lexical knowledge consists of two kinds:knowledge of individual words and knowledge of relations between words. The first kind knowledge has been valued by lexicographers and been sufficiently represented in dictionaries. However, the second kind knowledge has been underrepresented in dictionaries so far and therefore shall be attached more importance and be explicitly represented in learner's dictionaries.Printed learner's dictionaries are constrained in space, arrangement and cross-reference.CD-ROM dictionaries, with the help of computer-based techniques, are more functional in representing lexical relations in an explicit, direct, and systematic way.The thesis starts from discussion on the definition and advantages of a CD-AD,and then looks into lexical relations worthy to be represented in it.The emphasis of this thesis is put on effective representation of lexical relations in a CD-ROM dictionary environment. Theoretically, the thesis works out a lexicographic network model, which incorporates lexical-semantic relations into a dictionary's mediostructure.Practically, based on a comparative study on CD Big Five, the thesis draws experience and lessons from their strengths and weaknesses in hyper-referencing,display and representation of lexical relations, and puts forward three principles for representation of lexical relations:explicity, suitability and user-friendliness.Finally,to give a visual illustration of the proposed dictionary,an operational model is developed to show how various lexical relations are hyper-referenced in a CD-ROM dictionary.
