Field–dependence ---- field-independence is the most important part in all dimensions of cognitive style. It is widely studied and almost constitutes the theoretical framework of cognitive styles. The field cognitive style refers to the tendency that people rely on external referent or internal referent in their information processing. People who are greatly influenced by external factors are field-dependent. And those who are not or less influenced by external factors are field-independent, that is they are chiefly influenced by internal referent. As for the development of individual field cognitive style, it apparently moves from being field-dependent to being field-independent.With EFT and EMBU, the study tested the cognitive style, positive affection and negative affection of 198 college students from Qingdao University. By analyzing their positive affection and negative affection, the paper concludes the emotional characteristics of modern college students. And the relationship between their cognitive style and positive or negative affection is also studied. The conclusion of the study is as follows:1. The cognitive styles of college students are dramatically different in respect of grade, major and whether they have brothers or sisters. Freshmen, science majors and students who don't have brothers or sisters tend to be field-independent. While seniors, liberal art majors and students who have brothers and sisters tend to be field-dependent.2. The emotions of college students are greatly different in terms of gender, grade, location of their home, and whether they have brothers or sisters. Male college students have more negative affection than female college students, and so do seniors than freshmen, students from rural areas than those from urban areas. Students who don't have brothers or sisters are happier than those who have brothers and sisters.3. The EFT score of college students are obviously related to their negative affection and their feeling of happiness. Field-independent students have more positive affection and feel much happier than field-dependent ones. While field-dependent college students have more positive affection than field-independent ones.
