Assessment is considered a very significant factor in English teaching. Much negative influence wrought by summative assessment which is widely used now has been realized by educators. Formative assessment emerged under humanism and constructivist theory of learning, which is being accepted and used in English teaching in China. There are lots of researches focusing on formative assessment in middle school. Although more and more students go to secondary vocational school to study, there is little research about formative assessment in secondary vocational school English teaching. Based on the questionnaire targeted to two classes of digital control majors in Shandong Light Engineering School, this thesis intends to study the influence of assessment on secondary vocational school students and explore how formative assessment strategies can be used in secondary vocational school English teaching. The findings of this study show that formative assessment is more effective to aid secondary vocational school learners to master metacognitive strategies, strengthen motivation, form positive affect and improve English achievement.The thesis consists of seven parts: an introduction, the following five chapters and conclusion. Chapter One is a literature review. It gives a brief introduction of the research on formative assessment in language learning abroad and in China. Chapter Two reviews the theories related to formative assessment and define the keywords so as to lay a solid theoretical foundation for this thesis. Chapter Three describes the questionnaire designed by the author including the background, necessity, subjects, procedure, instruments and objectives. Chapter Four indicates the conclusions of this an experimental study-applying formative assessment strategies to secondary vocational school English teaching and discusses the results of the research. Chapter Five provides some teaching suggestions. The last part is a conclusion based on the findings of the study and presents the limitations of the study.
