Taiyuan Gong and drum, one type of folk drum music, spread wildly in Taiyuan of Shanxi province. As one of the three kinds of drum in Taiyuan, its playing style is magnificent and it is used extensively by the local in kinds of festivals, such as Ying Shen Sai She and so on, in oder to romance the ambience and express feeling. So this art form is loved by the local. From 1980s, Taiyuan Gong and drum has been developed rapidly. When the band of Taiyuan iron and steel company took part in the opening ceremony of the 11th Asian game in Beijing, it caused a great reaction. At the same time, to system research Taiyuan Gong and drum was seemed to be a prominent issue.The paper is investigate and discuss completely on social construction, material construction, and formal construction of Taiyuan Gong and drum. In social construction, it expatiates on prevailing areas, organization, folk custom and source. In material construction, it summarizes in instrument, formal and technique of performance, direction, Qupai (the name of the tune) and note. In formal construction, it construes the rhythm, timbre, development method of music and inner structure of Qupai (the name of the tune).Adhere to empirical attitude, it uses folk musicology, traditional literature research method, folklore to research those three construction and make a conclusion that Taiyuan Gong and drum, whose mainly rhythm is composed by thirteen characters, comes into being at least from Qing dynasty and antithesis is the unique development technique of it. This article system summarizes the artistic form and style characteristic of Taiyuan Gong and drum completely. Hope to enhance its fundamental research to a higher level.
