A Study Of "A And Not B" Construction In Modern Chinese

The "A is not B" structure is one of the commonly used structures in modern Chinese.According to the construction grammar theory,we call it "A and not B" construction in modern Chinese.This article takes 2500 corpora collected from the Modern Chinese Corpus of Peking University Chinese Linguistic Research Center(CCL),Chinese Language Corpus of Beijing Language and Culture University(BCC),Weibo,Baidu Tieba,etc.as research objects to research its the grammatical form,construction features,construction semantics,construction pragmatic functions,and the reasons for the formation and popularity of construction.This article is divided into five parts to …….The first chapter discusses the reasons for selecting the topic,defines the research object,explains the research significance,briefly describes the current status of the relevant research,explains the research method and the source of the corpus.The second chapter examines the morphological form of the"A is not B"construction in modern Chinese,and expounds the"form A before"and the"post B"respectively.The former item A of the construction is mostly served by personal pronouns that express the emotions of characters.The latter term of the construction has two major characteristics:firstly,it is mostly a negative structure,which constitutes a double negative structure with the previous"and not";secondly,it is often played by the structure of the word"",which constitutes"youbushi……de"(又不是……的)Structure,and through the analysis of the morphological structure of it,we can explore the subjective attitude and position of the expressor.The third chapter analyzes the semantics of the construction "A is not B" by using the theory of construction grammar.First of all,we discuss the rationale,integration,ambiguity,productivity,and repression of the "A but not B" construction.Secondly,the two constructional meanings of the "A is not B" construction are summarized: the first meaning indicates that there is a strong rebuttal tone and refutes a certain viewpoint or behavior;the second meaning indicates that an fact is stated objectively and the refutation tone Weaken.Thirdly,it is analyzed that there is an identity relationship and a generic relationship between the former A and the latter B of the construction.In addition,for the three variants of the "A is not B" construction,the "is A,not A" construction,the "not A,not B" construction,the "V1 + is not,V2 +is not" construction,Make detailed explanations based on specific language facts.Finally,and it is considered that the construction has the significance of emphasizing the subjective attitude of the expressor by the "A,but not B" construction is analyzed by default as the basic form omitted from the antecedent of the construction.The fourth chapter discusses in detail the six main functions of the subjective sentiment function,the refusal negation function,the interpretation function,the association function,the anti-expectation function and the discourse mark function of the "A is not B" construction.First,it discusses that the "A is not B" construction has a subjective modalityfunction to express emotions and attitudes.Secondly,the structure of the "A is not B" construction’s refutation and negation function is specifically explained in the following four aspects: 1)The former item A of the construction is mostly played by personal pronouns;2)The latter item B of the construction often takes negation structure and constitutes double negation construction together with "not";3)The latter term of the construction is more typical or extreme;4)Accentuation of syllable rhythm.Third,combining the best relevance principle(Sperber & Wilson)with contextual context to study the function of the construction in explaining the reason in the sentence.Fourth,association function,the listener needs to associate with the context to understand what the speaker’s intention is,so as to deduce the speaker’s implication and achieve the goal of successful communication.Fifth,it is pointed out that the anti-expectation function of the "A is not B" configuration only includes the anti-expectation function of "contrary to the speaker’s expectations" and "contrary to the listener’s expectations".Sixth,the "A is not B" construction has two discourse marker functions.First,the example that starts with "not B" is for the purpose of creating a topic and eliciting a certain point of refuting someone."Not B" is a method of topicalization,and it is a sign of topical creation.Second,"not B" is used as a parenthesis in a sentence to explain a situation.The fifth chapter discusses the formation and popular reasons of the "A is not B" configuration.The article briefly describes the formation of the "A is not B" construction from the two aspects of "suitability conditions" and "conversational cooperation principle".From the economic principle of language expression and the super expressive function of this structure,explain its popularity.Therefore,it shows that this type of construction is adaptable and meets the facial expression needs of people’s verbal communication.
