With the rapid and extensive economic and social development in China, higher vocational and technical education is boosted up so as to foster a new generation with practical skills and abilities to meet the needs and challenges of the fast progress of world science and technology. English language teaching, as an important component of the higher vocational and technical education system, should also focus on professional purposes, specialty related skills and language applicability. However, its achievements so far are not totally satisfactory owing to both intrinsic deficiencies and external influences. To extricate itself from the predicament, English language teaching in higher vocational and technical education has to form its unique idea and perception of teaching, self contained teaching mode and systematic contents and approach. This thesis mainly concerns the research of communicative approach when applying to the English teaching in higher vocational and technical colleges. It analyzes both its advantages and necessities, and confirms that communicative approach is an effective teaching method.We used to adopt the same strategies as that in the institutions English teaching in vocational colleges, and found that featureless approach is hard to achieve our practical aims. Centered to the communicative activities, aimed to foster the communicative abilities of students, these communicative approach features are exact the higher vocational colleges' goals. In the process of applying the communicative approach to the English course, a few advices and suggestions are also figured out, hoping these could help the promotion of communicative approach usage.
