A Case Study Of Rewriting Affected By Self-Censorship In The Chinese Subtitling Of Ratatouille

English-speaking films and television series have been flourishing in mainland China. As the subtitling of such audiovisual products has been developing fast in the past few years, it has obtained much attention in Translation Studies and has been dealt with in depth by a number of scholars. However, in the academic circles of China, subtitling has been under systematic investigation for rather a short time and related studies tend to be very practical. So far, studies in China relating to subtitling have often discussed strategies or methods of dealing with dialogue translation, but little work has touched upon the areas of and reasons for censorship imposed on subtitling and the creation, replacement and omission in subtitling as forms of rewriting caused by the subtitler's self-censorship. This thesis aims, from the ideological perspective, to provide some explanations on the rewriting of subtitles on Chinese cinema screens under actual and possible effects of censorship factors, especially the self-censorship activities, through a case study on Ratatouille, a 2007 American animation film. To this end, the"rewriting"theories pioneered by Andre Lefevere are adopted in analysis. Of course some other perspectives may provide a more comprehensive view of this subject.
