This project contains two parts. The first part is the English to Chinese translation of two chapters excerpted from Freedom of the Screen:Legal Challenges to State Film Censorship,1915-1981 by Laura Wittern-Keller.The second part is the critical commentary of the translation which introduces the significance of this project and analyses the theory and strategies applied in the translation. This project is started from a thought that something has to be done with the rapidly developing yet immature movie market of China and aims to provide China's movie-industry-related people with a reference on the censorship implemented for nearly seventy years in America. It can also be a knowledge-acquiring reading material for those who are interested in movie industry and legal system of America.Although many books about American movie censorship have been published, few translation works about both censorship and legal challenges to American movie industry can be found in Chinese. This project may add some new thoughts and creativities to China's film market reformation. In order to make the translation explicit and easy to understand, the translation action is conducted under the guidance of Skopos Theory and its three principles.Besides, some translation strategies are also adopted in the project and analyzed in the report. As a self-examination and self-improvement process, this critical commentary is necessary and useful for readers to understand the translation better.
