"Obituary" published in the press has become a traditional practices of Southeast Asian Chinese in Malaysia and Singapore in dealing with the death. According to the acquisition of the obituary information of "Nanyangshangbao" (1951-1976), the author explores obituary form on the newspaper, the "family" and "society" of Singapore and Malaysia Chinese reflected in the obituaries and how they inherited and created Chinese traditional social and cultural obituary heritage. This study shows that, in dealing with the death problem, the Singapore and Malaysia Chinese changed the traditional burial customs of sending obituary to the form of publishing them in Chinese newspapers, and it developed into a form of system including three parts: "notice", "condolences", and "appreciations". These Chinese-language newspapers published in the obituary were real, concrete record of the Chinese community and cultural life in the 20th century from the 1950s to the 1980s and provided an important first-hand information on the text. Through the text of the obituary inspected, the study will help us understanding how the Chinese community in Southeast Asia inherited and create Chinese cultural patterns.The full text is divided into four parts:Introduction tells the traditional funeral culture and the Chinese funeral culture. It also explores the position and role of obituary in the Chinese culture. The article states the research ideas and sources of information, and do a brief review of concerned research.Chapterâ… explores the basic content and form of obituary in "Nanyangshangbao", it studys the three major parts of the obituary systemand put the system to compare with traditional Chinese funeral customs procedures, and dicusses the differences and similarities of them, the cultural heritage significance is also dicussed.Chapterâ…¡studys Chinese family structure, family systems and family values, reflected in the obituary in "Nanyangshangbao".Chapterâ…¢, discusses Chinese "society" reflected in "Nanyangshangbao" obituaries, covering how Malaysia's ethnic Chinese community leaders came out, Chinese network of social relations, the Chinese mutual aid association, the Chinese religious belief patterns, and other issues."Conclusion" to sum up the contents of the above.
