The Ministry of Education issued the "National English Curriculum Standards", which indicates that the course goal of English in senior high school is to raise students' comprehensive language utilization ability. It also says that," To establish optional courses in high school is an important step in the curriculum reform, the main purpose to set optional courses is to provide students with diversity of choice and space of the development of personality, and it can expand the students' knowledge to some extent to achieve inter-disciplinary learning, and provide students with the chance to plan their life. Compulsory and optional courses work together to help the students form the literacy of English and meet the needs of individual student. Consequently, compulsory and optional courses should complement one another. Film and television optional course is one of the optional courses. This essay, titled as the film and TV optional courses in high school, not only tallies with English curriculum reform direction, but also meets the teacher and student's needs. After consulting the related essays, from the latter year of 2007, I began to do the work of exploration and research of English film and television optional course, intending to study the course objective, teaching content, implementation, teaching evaluation and so on to make a scientific and effective design and provide guidance for high school for the implementation of film and television optional course. In a high school in Jiangxi Province, I carried out an investigation to analyze the possibility and feasibility of the optional course, based on which I set the curriculum goal, the development principle, and the selection standard. After that I focus on the implementation of the optional course by giving detailed examples of teaching process. Finally I evaluate the effects of the optional course and reconsider about the course. There are seven chapters in the essay. The first chapter introduces the research background, the purpose of the study, the research content and the definition of related terms. The second chapter analyzes the status quo of optional courses in high school home and abroad, and summarizes the published essays from the aspect of the course objective, selection criteria, teaching methods, teaching activities and evaluation. The third chapter states the foundation theories of optional courses in senior high school. The paper takes the "Input hypothesis theory" as well as the cultural linguistics as the theory basis, which shows that the essay pays attention to both utilization and humanity. The fourth chapter is detailed in the process of optional courses with the example of NO.1 high school of De'an in Jiangxi Province. I carried out a survey and then set the course objective, selection criteria, teaching strategies, and finally implement the course. The fifth chapter is about the principle and the method of evaluation. The sixth chapter states what we should pay attention to and the way to improve the effect of optional classes, which is reference for primary and secondary school teachers. The seventh chapter is a conclusion, in which I analyze the problems I met and the shortcomings of the essay and what I should do in the future.
