The dissertation is a research based on 77 questionnaires done on learners whose mother tongue(1st Language) is Malay studying Mandarin as a second language at 4 learning units.The research aims to study the syntactic errors found in the questionnaires through Contrastive Analysis and to explore their implication to language transfer. Recommendations on pedagogical improvements and writing of teaching materials are made at the end of the dissertation.Chapter One takes a brief look at the linguistic environment and situation of learning Mandarin as a second language in general and in particular for Malay in Malaysia.Besides, it also gives a brief review on related literatures,an explanation on the significance of the study and an introduction of theories and methods applied in the analysis.Chapter Two first outlines the arrangement of the contents of the research,i.e.the objective and the scope of study,description of subjects,acquisition of research materials, limitations of the study and etc.Secondly,it explains the design of the questionnaire,the method and procedure of handling questionnaire,the calculation and analysis of data and etc.Chapter Three focuses on description of the syntactic differences between Mandarin and Malay by the method of Contrastive Analysis.Furthermore,analysis on the statistical data of errors found in the questionnaires was carried out in terms of syntax,phrase and sentence under the syntactic structure of both Mandarin and Malay.Chapter Four investigates the implication between the syntactic errors found in Chapter Three and the language transfer occurred in the process of learning Mandarin as a second language of the subjects.For the last chapter,based on the findings of the study,some recommendations are made for purpose of pedagogical improvements and writing of teaching materials.In addition,it also reviews the shortcomings in the process of the study and suggestions are raised for further research.
