| The major idea of this dissertation is to ponder about the gain and loss of Edward W.Said's literary criticism from analyzing it intensively. Said's literary criticism seems scattered because he makes it unsystemical on purpose. It's difficult to catch hold of a clue that runs through. In order to obtain the clear-cut redivivus of Said's literary criticism, the dissertation decides to "fix the points" first, then "connects the strings", and colors it up at last. The strategy is "from parts to whole, gradually, with hiberarchy". In the end, Said's literary criticism will be judged in-depthly.Concretely, the dissertation catches hold of the key words that appear frequently in Said's literary criticism first. They are "dislocation", "history", and "worldliness". They just like the gene of Said's literary criticism. The dissertation will analyze them intensively one by one. And this job will be the base. Chapter 1 makes up of this job.Literary criticism must deal with relations among author, text and reader, and relations among reality, morality and beauty. In this case, the dissertation then analyzes Said's literary criticism with these two groups of relations, in order to present his main literary ideas in given frame. At the same time, the dissertation compares them with other criticism theories, and analyzes the similarities and differences between them briefly. Chapter 2 makes up of these jobs.The relationship between Said's literary criticism and politics is always shadiness, because of the hue of ideology from his "humanism and democratic criticism", which is just the name he gave to his literary criticism. In order to present the hue , Chapter 3 of the dissertation start also with key words. They are "humanism" and "democracy". The dissertation will analyze the meanings of these two key words and the relationship between them in Said's literary criticism deeply. And his argumentation about classics will be an example of his "humanism and democratic criticism".Chapter 4 makes up of critical review aiming at Said's literary criticism. "Antinomy" which exists in "dislocation" and "worldliness" from Chapter 1 is the clue. The aim is finding out the ultimate problem of Edward W.Said's literary criticism. |
