On Studies Of Indexicalities

Indexicalities are expressions whose references are determined by the contexts of their use.Familiar examples of indexicalities are "T","now","here",and so on. Indexicalities are not only a complicated and controversial linguistic phenomenon,but also a puzzle of philosophy,logic and linguistics.They are relative to understanding of the meaning of natural language.Pioneer studies of indexicalities came from Stoic school of ancient Greece,but Pierce didn't present the official"indexical expressions" until the late 19th century.Since then,Frege,Russell,Hillel and many other scholars on the issues of indexicalities had an in-depth research,which has led to widespread concern in the academic community.A large number of indexical theses,monographs and papers have been published.People's understanding of indexicalities continue to deepen.However,the research of indexicalities has fallen behind the research of definite descriptions,proper names and the other type of semantics in theoretical depth and breadth.There are differences on many issues.From the perspective of philosophy arid logic,I not only more detailedly study and comment on the basic theory and some features of indexicalities,but also further study the impact of indexicalities on other theories,such as the theories of traditional meaning and reference.The paper is divided into four parts:The first part of the paper looks back the studied history of indexicalities,and states and analyzes the different theories about indexicalities in history.It is to display the sequence of the studies of indexicalities.Part two of the paper defines and explains the theories of indexicalities,and it has three sections:The first section is about definition of indexicalities.The second section is about classification of indexicalities.The third section is about main features of indexicalities.The third part is the focus of the paper.It is logical analysis of indexicalities.It has also three sections:The first section is about the intension and the extension of indexicalities.The second section is about truth-false value of indexicalities.The third section is about formalization of indexicalities.Part four evaluates the theories of indexicalities.It mainly discusses that indexicalities play a major role in logic,intercourse of people's thinking and verbal communication.Through four-part,my aim is to reveal much significance of indexicalities in logical research and in the natural lauguage expression from different angles.
