Deng Shi was a famous journalist,excellent thinker and publisher in the history of our country.He was good at political comment and had a unique political and cultural perspective.Deng Shi believed in the "Applying Theory" in his early years, meanwhile,he investigated the Western social and political systems hoping to edify the masses.Later,fearing the spread of European ideological trends,he tried to assimilate the essence of the traditional culture to form the "quintessence" and combine the strengths of the east and the west in order to regain the former glory of Sinology.He spent most of his life to launch patriotic publications which reflected the changes of his idea.In the early twentieth century,Deng Shi started the Political Art Communications and National Essence Journal.Both of them became representative journals between the Reform and Revolution period.In order to fulfill the wish of permeating his political thought,Deng Shi launched a comprehensive periodical named Political Art Communications,which included the knowledge of politics,sociology,history,science and so on.He wrote a lot to introduce Western political system and science civilization,and analyzed the defects of political system in China at the same time,hoping to find a way to reconcile the East and the West.By that time influenced by Spencer's Social theory of evolution, Deng Shi propagandized the thought of nationalism;when the nation is on the brink of ruin,he analyzed the means of the aggressor and proclaimed the spirit of independence.At the same time,he considered that the system that united with the monarch and crowd and the local self-government was more suitable to Chinese society.He also put forward his unique World-group theory and heaped praise on socialism.Deng Shi thinks deeply about the Chinese socio-cultural trend hoping that common people could reconsider the traditional culture,furthermore,we could not discard the Chinese characteristic simply and blindly while studying the West.He founded the cultural conservatism association "the National Studies Preservation Association" and began the editorial work of National Essence Journal.In order to realize the ideal of "Patriotism,Nationalism & Study Preservation",the used the Western learning to certificate Chinese Learning.Under the despotism of Qing government he resolutely proposed "the national studies" and "Emperor's studies" were at daggers drawn;In the history aspect,Deng Shi approved Liang Qichao's new history thought and echoed "the History Revolution",hoping the common people can could pay great attention to the people history;Proceeding from the very practical theory of mastering ancient classic for application,he researched pre-Qin Masters in Chinese Philosophy,he initiated the revival of ancient study,also made a more objective appraisal to Confucian classics and Qing confucian School.Moreover,Deng Shi has made the prominent contribution to the collation of Chinese ancient books by establishing the national studies preservation library.
