| With its meanings and functions, the Chinese knots has absorbed the purest essence of the Chinese culture. The Chinese character sheng(绳, ropes) has the sounds the same as shen(神, gods). In the long history when the Chinese culture formed, the Chinese people once worshiped ropes. Acording to written records, Lady NvWa, the creator of human beings, put ropes in the clay and erected it as the first man. Ropes look like curling dragons and snakes and the Chinese claim to be the offsprings the dragon. That is why the portrait of dragon god in prehistory appeared as a collection of ropes. The Chinese character jie(结) stands for vigor and strength, harmony and reunion and intimacy and warmth. Meanwhile, jie(结) sounds like ji(å‰), which contains more and richer meanings such as blessing, wealth, longevity, happiness, fortune, safety and health. To the Chinese people, ji(å‰) is a permanent theme of their pursuit.
