On Two Worlds Faithful Representation Of Poetic Metaphor From The Perspective Of Cognitive Linguistics

Metaphor is a universal linguistic phenomenon. Traditional linguists regard metaphor merely as a rhetoric device to transfer inner meanings while ignore the operational mechanism of metaphors. With the development of western philosophy in linguistics, people know more and more about cognitive metaphor. The publication of Lakoff and Johnson's Metaphors We Live By is a milestone that people have begun studying metaphor from cognition perspective in the round. In this book, Lakoff and Johnson regard metaphor as an important cognitive phenomenon, and a kind of universal thinking concept possessed by human beings. Therefore, it is imperative for us to transfer the cognitive styles expressed in the source language to the target language.Since translation is called a kind of science, there have been so many schools of thought on translation theory. By focusing respectively on author, text and reader, they have offered distinct views on translation. Since each of these views lays emphasis on just one key element of communication, they all suffer from partiality and one-sidedness. According to experientialism, Wang Yin constructs a cognitive model of translation: the basic view of cognitive linguistics can be summed as"reality-cognition-language", that is to say, language is formed based on the interaction between people and the objective world and refined by human's cognition. So language comes from reality and cognition, language contains the law of the objective world and the law of cognition, then translation is in terms both of multiple interactions among subjects with differently embodied backgrounds and of a good mastery of the various meanings of the original discourse. These meanings then get mapped and re-expressed in the target language, resulting in the depiction of the objective world and the author's cognitive world. Poetry is a pattern that can produce pleasure, satisfaction, and rejoicing. The poets always convey their cognitive worlds by the description of the objective world which embody in the metaphorical language.The author of this thesis, who is inspired by the study of metaphor and translation from the perspective of cognitive linguistics, studies the poetic metaphor translation from a new research perspective which is that poetic metaphor translation should be valued by the transferring veracity of the author's cognitive world and the objective world that the author describes.I hope that this thesis can facilitate the rendering of metaphors, as well as inspire further exploration on translation studies.
