Traditionally, metaphor is only considered as a figure of speech and a deviation from ordinary language which is more likely to appear in poems, plays or other forms of literature. But with the initiation and development of Cognitive Linguistics, the traditional views on metaphor face enormous challenge and even subversion. According to the cognitive theory of metaphor, metaphor is seen as an ability with which human think, understand and perceive entities around us. This is the first time when metaphor and human's cognition are combined and this combination in no time gives rise to a "metaphor revolution".Every four year's FIFA World Cup is not only the honeymoon for the football fans all over the world, but also an exciting festival for all the people who have passion and enthusiasm for life. The World Cup is a world war,32 football national teams from all the five continents coming together to fight for pride and honor as well as the trophy. The World Cup is a magnificent show, offering you the world's best players'beautiful performance. The World Cup is a journey, a class, a hurricane, a family, a melting pot...The press spares no efforts to deliver such fantastic football matches to the world. Through mass reading, the author finds there are plenty of metaphors in football news. There is already some research about the metaphors in sports news. But most of them are stuck to the conceptual metaphor "SPORTS IS WAR", lacking of systematic and extensive research. Moreover, the examples quoted in these papers are mostly cliches, which are too old to represent the new tendencies of metaphor research. In fact, there are many other kinds of metaphors in sports news, which are vivid, appealing, impressive and pleasing to read. People can get esthetic pleasure as well as information. This thesis collects all the 64 matches'1751 news headlines from the official website of FIFA, www.fifa.com, from June 11 to July 12, and makes a qualitative and quantitative analysis of metaphors in the news. Through this study, the author tries to find the patterns, mechanisms and new tendencies of metaphors in sports news, with the aim of enriching metaphor study from the range and depth.
