Analysis Of The Official Images In Liaozhaizhiyi

Since appearance of Liao Zhai Zhi Yi, many scholars have researched it and their achievements were remarkable. However, there are few studies about the official images in the book. With the help of my tutor, I choose the problem to continue its inquiry. This thesis is divided into six parts:The first part, review the research about the official images. The researches can be divided into three types: the study of it in Qing Dynasty, they expounded their personal views, mainly from the perspective of feudal moral. Though the views are special and profound, too fragmented; Works studied about it expose the darkness of feudal society, and shows its significant anti-feudal values. But they are too narrow and simple; There are many thesises about it which further excavate the significance of the official images in Liao Zhai Zhi Yi. Because of the limitations of discourse, these short thesises only grasp one point, regardless of the remainings, therefore these study do not show complete analysis of its meaning. So, it is still necessary to continue in-depth elucidation.Part two mainly explores the possible causes of creating these officials. The wars were constant at the early Qing Dynasty, So rulers had no time to manage the officials, and they had to accept many of the former Ming officials. These caused an overall decline in official qualities. Pu Songling experienced the suffering as a class of laborers. At the same time, Pu Songling did not realize the ideal of becoming an official through taking part in examinations. Pu Songling was not satisfied with the darkness of society, calling for better political systems in his works.Part three, as the offical images in the book enjoys one or more characteristics, officials images are divided into four types in general. They are--honest and upright official, corrupt official, torturer and other officials. Their characteristics are analyzed respectively.Part four analyzes the artistic features of official creation in Liao Zhai Zhi Yi. First is the feelings of grief. Pu Songling wrote out his inner world, made the work filled with his feelings and awe-inspiring righteousness. Second is rich and colourful criticizing art. Because of the high-handed cultural polices of the Qing Dynasty, Pu Songling dared not expose the darkness of imperial court openly, so he wrote theYang world by the metaphor of Underworld, wrote figures by objects and reality by dreams to achieve his critical purpose. The third is the art of contrast: the contrast of fiction and reality, the contrast of detailed description and brief description, the conrtast of writers'attitudes.Part five investigates view of creating officials of Pu Songling and the source of creative ideas systematically. It mainly demonstrates the writer's attitude of choosing the qualified people, the concept of loving people, the concept of cautious rule of law and the concept of revenge beyond the law. Pu Songling inherited the Confucian ideas which highlights the policy of benevolence and selection of a worthy.Part six summarizes the full text. Highlight the idea of modernity of Pu songling's official ideas and great breaking through significance of official creation. At the same time, point out the shortages of the official creation and evaluate the significance of official images in the literary history.
