The Tale of Hero, a long novel written in plain Chinese, was finished in the late Qing Dynasty. This novel writes about a typical Manchu family (a minority in China now but in control of China in the Qing Dynasty), with a theme propagating chivary, a plot attractive and complex and a language close to people's daily life. Wen Kang reveals a valuable picture depicting what it was like in the late Qing Dynasty. A lot of typical characters appeared in the novel, and together with them the diverse forms of address, which are characteristic of the late Qing Dynasty. The form of address is a treasure to human society and a reflection of the authentic human language.The thesis, by combining the static and dynamic perspectives, employs description method, analysis method and inductive method to analyse the typical forms of address in the novel and tries to find the origin of them by applying relevant linguistic knowledge. The thesis aims to reveal the system of forms of address in the 19th century, when the novel was completed.The thesis, based on the The Tale of Hero published in July,2013, carries out a systematic research on the forms of address which appeared in the novel in light of the previous study.The introduction mainly deals with the corpus value of the book, its value to the study of forms of address, the definition of forms of address, the criteria by which the forms of address are defined in the thesis and the previous study on forms of address from five perspectives.In chapter one, the forms of address in the book are classified into five groups, that is the paternal address term, the maternal address term, husband address term, the wife address term and other address term. The thesis tries to find the origin of them via the subcategories of the five groups. In addition, the thesis analyses the reason why the address term formed and the feelings conveyed by these terms, in order to explore its relationship with the law system in china, the marriage system and Manchu tradition.In chapter two, the address terms were classified into five groups, that is the social address terms indicating the relationship between people, occupation, ability, residential area and the Manchu people'address. The paper tries to find the changes of the address forms mentioned above. Then chapter 2 tries to find the reasons why they changed. At last, it analyses the feelings behind the address terms and explores its relationship with the ancient feudalism system. Manchu traditional culture, society, economy and imperial examination culture in particular, the birth and continuous development of which has generated a lot of address forms in official circles.Chapter three mainly deals with the word formation of the address forms in the book, and classifies them into simple address forms and compound address forms. It also contains a detailed description of the subtitles of the two main categories. At the end of the thesis, the features of the word formation in the book or even in the 19th century was summarized. Also mentioned are the changes compared with what was before them.The conclusion is the summary of the thesis. The appendix is the address forms appearing in the thesis arranged in the alphabetical order of the capital word.
