There has been a long history in using translation as a teaching and learning method in the foreign language classroom.With the emergence of both language learning theories and linguistic theories,translation underwent a fall from grace,and gradually lost support from teachers who always prefer theory-based methods such as the Communicative Method.But in the past decades,there appeared a new tendency that practitioners in foreign language teaching circle,after rationally evaluating strengths and weaknesses of those modern pedagogical methods,returned to translation,which,as an essential component of traditional foreign language teaching,was once much neglected and inappropriately criticized.The education of professional colleges has become an indispensable part of China's higher education.It develops fast and continuously since the enlargement of enrollments in colleges and universities in 1999.And English is a necessary course in professional college.So to find a proper English language teaching method for these students is the duty of every English teacher in professional colleges.The professional college has its own features and we can demonstrate that it demands the practice of pedagogical translation in its FLT.In this paper,based on the relevant theories of Second Language Acquisition,teaching methods,and the research findings of the author, the author deals with the issue of what is pedagogical translation and why it is suitable for professional college and how it might be used best as a teaching technique in English classes of professional college students.The dissertation initially gives an overall review of pedagogical translation method,to show a clear picture of translation in the development of FLT,including its definition,characteristics,merits and demerits and its status.Then according to the present situation of FLT in the professional colleges,the author analyzes the questionnaires for students and teachers and interviews with them concerning their attitudes and strategies to the pedagogical translation.Then the thesis points out the necessity and feasibility for the application of pedagogical translation in the professional college.At last,the thesis puts forward some feasible specific methods to practice it in professional colleges.
