The city of Rome is truly the world's super-large city in the ancient Mediterranean area, Its population has reached as many as one million to the period of late Republic and early Empire. The supply of grain for so largy a population in the city of Rome is no doubt an extremely difficult task in the ancient world. It was brought about by a combination of the lower level of agricultural technology,the difficulties of transport, and the limited ability to preserve foodstuffs.The thesis is focused on the grain supply of the city of Rome from late Republic to early Empire and can be divided into three parts,that is the introduction,main text and conclusion.Part one is an introduction.This part focuses on elaborating the research status of this issue in the academic circles at home and abroad.It also illustrates the significance of the research.Part two is a main text,which is divided into four chapters, respectively discussing the population and the amount of grain supply in the city of Rome, its grain sources,the grain transport and storage of the city of Rome, and the distribution of public grain in the city of Rome during this period.Part three is a conclusion.In the part of the conclusion,I made a comprehensive summary on the grain supply of the city of Rome from the late Republic to early Empire.
