Narcissistic Artists

Narcissism which is one of important aspect of modern psychology is worth of being researched for human being。According to the study of modern psychology, narcissism is one of unconsciousness psychology for every person, but for the artists, Narcissism expresses the self-concern and strong behaving desire, the relationship between the artist'narcissism and the artist self-portrait is one kind of painting form related with the artist'narcissism, i.e. the concentrated expression of the artist'Narcissism on and mental visual and artistic creation.Self portrait is an independent drawing method which was popular during the renaissance. As a special drawing method, self portrait became irreplaceable because of its connection with the artist itself. Thus, on one hand, self portraits appear in different forms. On the other hand, they are mirrors and carrier of the artists'personality, sensibility and experience, through which people know the inner-world of the artists. This paper can be divided into two parts according to the role and expression of the narcissism during the self portrait drawing.Part one including the 2nd, 3rd and 4th chapter mainly addressed how"Narcissism"inspires the artists to create the self- portraits and the influence upon the artists. This part firstly summarizes the relevant content of"narcissism", then analsizes the artists'characters from the mentality of"narcissism", finally clarifies the relation between"narcissism and painting. Based on the above reasons, the inevitable result is concluded– the emergent of self portrait.Part two i.e. the 5th chapter bases on the mental characters divides the self portrait into two types: Self-Absorbed and Self-Exhibitionism. Self portraits of Self-Absorbed include two typical forms: self-portrait mirror, narrative self-portrait; and symbolic self-portrait for Self-Exhibitionism. The article investigates these three characteristics of self portraits from the portrait works.The discussion of narcissism never goes to an end. And this article which recurs to self-portrait makes more researches how the unconsciousness narcissism influences the creation of self-portrait and artistic individuality. This paper is trying to dig the content of narcissism and to figure out the self-portrait'signification , in order to explore the connection between the mind and the art, thus give some enlightenment to our future art creation.
