Novel Writing Since New Narcissism

Originated from the ancient Greek mythology, narcissism is about a psychological state we human beings born with. It is attracting more and more people's attention in modern western society. First, as one of the important research objects in western psychology, almost all the well-known psychoanalysts have made systematic explorations of it since Freud and the researches are very fruitful in terms of its psychological origin, essence and forms. Second, narcissism is also an important social cultural phenomenon. Especially, in the post-industrial western society, narcissism has turned into the core of its cultural character. Concerning the literary creation, with different macro-cultural backgrounds and micro-personal living conditions, writers of different times inevitably present narcissism with different forms. The masses of these forms emerging in the novel creation also bring a change in narration. Moreover, behind different narcissistic behaviors there exist similar psychological and cultural motivations, and the similarity forms a clear clue in the novel creation of the new period, profoundly influencing the current writers.Since the new period, China has experienced the great social transformation. In this process, literature is marginalized from its original central position and the writers' sense of elite is gradually weakened. Their marginal position and civilianized writing attitude enable them to pay close attention to and express themselves. In some sense, they can only retreat to their inner heart to defend themselves and narcissism thus develops. The traditional Confucianism combined with the western individualism which had a profound influence in "The May 4th" period becomes one of the typical cultural characteristics of our age and the particularity of which in turn becomes the hotbed of narcissism. The novel creation of some writers thus get bogged down because under the influence of narcissism writers can not get rid of their own mode of thinking which makes it impossible for them to get breakthrough in both the content and style of novels. Therefore, only when this psychological mode of narcissism is broken and the genuine freedom of heart is achieved can the creation and life get renewed.
