Han Dynasty is one epoch period in Chinese calligraphy history.In this period, the development of calligraphy (characteristic forms) started to appeared in different forms from that in the previous time in daily life, the characteristic forms branched and be distinguished to be official school and grassroots school. These two schools developed equally and sometimes combined with each other, which drove Chinese calligraphy forward speedily. This development form is one model we called bi-line or multi-line development model, played a very important roll in regulating characteristic forms, and this form never changed in the whole calligraphy history.The development of calligraphy and characteristics are both in dynamic and progressive process. In calligraphy development history, it was influenced by many factors and developed different development models, these models all impact on the calligraphy development. Based on this ideology, this article tries to use the bi-line model between grassroots-cursive characteristics and official-regular script development to analyze the inherent law in the progressive process. From Qin dynasty, the calligraphy development started to emerge the bi-line development model, which, includes characteristics in alternating in cursive and regular style, is the calligraphic basic evolution. One aspect, rely on the royalty power, the characteristics is regulated and fixed and became the temporary regular script characteristics, from another aspect, the grassroots changed and dissolve this regulation in daily life, the regular script is cursive but still restrict in a certain range. So, the royalty regular the characteristics again and again, the characteristics is changed and curved by grassroots again and again, which formed the evolution law of characteristics form development. This phenomenon is one course, not results. This article based on Hang Dynasty, probe into this unique phenomenon and tries to find the inherent law and the factors which come into being the law.From four aspects, this article elaborates its opinion. First, this article clarifies the relationship between characteristics and calligraphy in Han Dynasty to grasp the whole situation in that period; secondly, from the functional level, analyze the inner reasons which contributed into the bi-line development model in calligraphy; thirdly, focus on the development features of bi-line model to analyze the historic factors and the inherent laws between the grassroots-cursive characteristics and official-regular script; and the forth, analyze the consequent relationship between this two characteristics forms in bi-line model in Han Dynasty. Finally, this article addressed the meaning of studying this bi-line development model in Han calligraphy, and its revelation for modern calligraphy development.
