This paper focuses on the spread of the Ou-style calligraphy in the western frontier regions of China and Japan during the Tang Dynasty and the Five Dynasties periods,with the Dunhuang cave of scriptures and the Japanese Collection of Ou-style regular script manuscript as the main objects of study.Through the collection and collation of the plates and the analysis of related documents,I analyze and study the stylistic and formal characteristics of the Dunhuang and Japanese collections of Ou-style regular script manuscript.Discusses the different stylistic appearances of the Ou-style regular calligraphy in different regional environments,cultural exchanges,and aesthetic styles.The handwritten Ou-style regular script from the Dunhuang and Japanese collections is compared with the regular script stone carvings of Ouyang Xun and Ouyang Tong,and with Ouyang Xun’s works in running script,to further reflect on the different perspectives of the inscribed regular script and everyday writing in terms of tools,materials,the identities of the writers,the psychology of writing,as well as functions and styles.Knowing the past and appreciating the present,the study of the handwriting styles allows us to further understand the Ou-style regular script in contemporary calligraphy education and calligraphy exhibition.Facing some problems with the Ou-style regular script in primary and secondary school calligraphy education,and the changes in the method of taking the Ou-style regular script in the successive national exhibitions of calligraphy and seal carving.Finally,I will practice my calligraphy from three aspects: interpreting inscriptional calligraphy with handwritten calligraphy,the inspiration from Ou-style brushworks in the writing of regular script,and the large-character writing of Ou-style regular script.Combining the problems I encountered in my artistic practice,I will discuss the solutions and provide ideas for further in-depth studies.
