A Comparative Study Of The Style Transfer From The Perspective Of Literary Stylistics

Style transfer is an important part in the translation studies of literary works, but controversial views remain as to the definition of style and the studies on style transfer are always too abstract or impressionistic. As a result, the translators are inclined to overlook the stylistic value of the linguistic choices, leading to the phenomenon of"deceptive equivalence."As a discipline mediating between linguistics and literary criticisms, literary stylistics concerns how the writer manipulates language choices to generate aesthetic effects and enhance thematic significance. In order to better the quality of literary translation, the present thesis aims at a comparative study of the style transfer from the perspective of literary stylistics, with the case study of the two Chinese versions of The Great Gatsby, for the purpose of proving the necessity and efficiency of the literary stylistic approach in translation studies.In this paper, some typical examples of lexical expression, syntactic structure and narrative point of view are selected and analyzed in the light of Literary Stylistics, and they are compared to see if they have transferred the original stylistic value. In terms of the style transfer, due to the neglect of the stylistic choices, sometimes the translators fail to preserve the ST's thematic significance and aesthetic value, leading to the style loss.Therefore, it is of great importance to apply Literary Stylistics to the fictional translation, because it can enhance the translator's awareness of the relationship between linguistic choices and stylistic value and preserve the original's style. It is suggested that the translators should try to reproduce the original's stylistic features, instead of sacrificing the ST stylistic value for the sake of smoothness and readability.
