On Transference Of Character's Point Of View In Fictional Translation

Point of view, also called as focalization or perspective, is an important narrative technique in fictions. In narratology, the concept of point of view refers to the angle from which the narrator or the character in fiction observes the story. With different points of view, the same event would present different structures and different appeal. As with the rising of narratology and stylistics in the last century, narrative point of view has aroused much interest in the academic world, but some misunderstanding and chaos have also occurred. What this paper is going to explore is, among kinds of narrative points of view, the character's point of view in fiction.This paper is going to apply the theories of literary stylistics, with the use of some concepts in narratology, in order to probe into the transference of character' point of view in fiction translation, through analyzing three Chinese versions of Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin. Fiction translators should pay attention to the change of point of view during translation, understand the linguistic form of character's point of view, and then try to transfer it in a proper way.
