This thesis focuses on the landscape paintings that have occupied an important position in Georgia O'Keeffe's art career,who is an American female artist in the 20^th century,as the object of study,and seeks her landscape paintings' essence intention by analyzing and discussing the emotion and symbolic factors that are implied in Georgia O'Keeffe's landscape paintings.The thesis mainly adopts the study approach of iconography.First of all,it analyzes the causations of Georgia O'Keeffe's painting language that has symbolism and metaphor in it,through comparing with the landscape paintings drawn by the contemporaneous landscape artists Sheeler as well as Dove;Secondly,by contrasting Georgia O'Keeffe's different periods and styles of landscape paintings,it points out their immanent implications of various symbolic elements in Georgia O'Keeffe's landscape paintings as well as the spirit meanings that were given through the natural scenery,region scenery,and the scenery in heart,that is to say,her artworks of urban scenery show the excess of a female artist from the external real world to the psychological level.Mountains and lakes describe her emotions' sustenance,and desert landscapes show the seeking to the essence of life.Patio implies the appeasement to her inner feelings in virtue of the nature scenery,and the description of all kinds of spaces declare the desire that she has,hoping the inner spirit and the universe exist side by side;Finally,the passage focuses on "symbolism",and analyze different series of landscape paintings from various aspects,and compare different artworks in one set,different period artworks,different painting styles,and artworks that have discrepancy in both similarity and dissimilarity.Through analyzing main attribute-contradictoriness,it seeks the spirit and emotion symbolism that are concealed beyond the appearance,and clarify her art creation's essence,which is to infuse the instincts specially owned by females into the unknown objects and specific experience,concert it into the foregone worlds and try to seek the widespread connotation of universe and the essence of life.Georgia O'Keeffe's artworks have internalized the external objects,that is,to personalize the nature.Through assimilating the external objects and the self image,they infused the personal experience and feelings as well as the widespread connotation of universe,in order to form the transformation from unknown to known objects.Georgia O'Keeffe is one of the outstanding female artists in America.Her landscape paintings reflect her unique inner feeling experience and her transcend and creation in visual language as a female artist.The successful fulfillment of this process has a huge and profound apocalyptic significance to the art creations by the artists especially the female artists afterwards.
