English has become an international language ever since the last century. It is the mother tongue for nations like UK,USA,Canada,Australia and New Zealand;it is also the second or foreign language for many a nation."English is used all around the world by professionals and academics in international encounters;it is often the official language of international and multinational companies and industries;it is the language of the Internet"(Barbara.A.Fennell 2005:243).Therefore,English has been the most popular and effective communicative tool among nations and peoples and it plays an unsubstitutional role in the multinational politics, economy, culture and other fields.Today, although English is still considered as one language,it is not an abstract single concept with one identical standard any more due to the nativization of English in different regions. The wide use of English around the world inevitably brings the plural or multiple linguistic and cultural identities into English in the different cross-cultural communication contexts,so the term "World Englishes" frequently appears so as to represent so many English varieties existing in the world and reflects the reality that English is no longer what it used to be.China English is just the result of nativization of English in Chinese context. As one of the non-native English varieties,it is receiving more popularity and now serves as an effective tool to introduce foreign cultures into China and spread Chinese culture in the world as well. The term "China English" was first employed by Ge Chuangui(1982),and then adopted by many others who joined the study of China English. In this dissertation, the author adheres to this term though many foreign scholars still prefer to use Chinese English in their articles.Chapter 1 is the literature review of China English study. In addition, the similarities and differences between China English and Chinglish are discussed since these two terms are the unavoidable concepts in this study. Then,an objective and comprehensive definition of China English is proposed.Chapter 2 is the study of China English from the theory of English varieties. As a particular non-native English variety,it develops in the global context of English nativization, but it also possesses its unique linguistic characteristics in Chinese cultural context.Chapter 3 is the concrete illustration of the acceptability of China English from theoretical basis and intercultural practice.Chapter 4 is the analysis of the Chinese identities of China English.Chapter 5 is the tentative application of China English in ELT in China. The author attempts to extend the study of China English into English teaching practice. In fact,it is of a great value and importance to maintain Chinese identity in ELT.Being conscious of China English will help Chinese students overcome the Chinese cultural aphasia. An integration of Chinese culture with ELT in China should be regarded as a complement to culture teaching, which will surely raise the students' cross-cultural communicative competence in the context of globalization.
