The Franks who settled the political pattern of the early Middle Ages in Western Europe had close relationship with the Roman Catholic Church.Presented territory from the Pepin the Short, the coronation of Charlemagne, both could be traced back to the Clovis' conversion. In this paper,I'd like to discuss these issues about the Franks' conversion mainly on the early Merovingian dynasty.Clovis,King of the Franks, converted to Christianity at the end of the fifth century. It is the beginning of a relationship that features cooperation, mutual benefit,all-win and common prosperity in early Middle Ages in Western Europe. In the past, domestic scholars did little research on the subject how the German people converted to Christianity. There are some arguable statements which are up for be discussed and explored deeper up to the present. In this thesis, through analyzing the process of conversion of the Franks,an attempt to be tried to interpret the Franks why give up the old polytheism, and convert to the Christian, and explore some doubtful issues in my opinion. This research are planned to study mainly on these three aspects:Clovis' baptism, the relationship between kings and bishops, pagan superstition and worship of saints and their relics, and supported by a comparison amount a number of Germanic peoples conversion experiences. The text can be divided into three parts. The first two chapters can be considered as a whole focuses on the background and process of Clovis' conversion, and made some analyses of the purpose and exact time on his baptism. Some comparisons are made between the belief of the Burgundy, the Visigoth and the Franks.Chapterâ…¢and Chapterâ…£also can be classified as an integer.Chapterâ…¢described kings and bishops in order to promote the spread of the Christian faith that established and adopted some religious policies. This part also involving contradictions of the potency between the royal and the ecclesiastic which began to emerge.Chapterâ…£focuses on the superstition of polytheism compared with the miracle of Saints. The Church promotes Saints and their holy miracle positively, and its general purpose is to make it easier for the Saints replacing the status of gods of the polytheism, which can be regarded as one of the Church's religious policies.Chapterâ…¤is the third part, summed up and comment on the spread course of the Christian faith in the Franks which encountered some whirligigs and difficulties in the dissemination,as well as the general impact of the Franks' conversion.
