Being an outstanding representative of American realist novelists,Mark Twain is considered to be one of the greatest American writers in the nineteenth century and the father of modern American literature. After over a century's trial on its literary value,His The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn, with its fully representation of Mark Twain's style, has been universally acknowledged as a masterpiece in the world literature. This thesis attempts to investigate The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn through the approach of modern stylistics, particularly the theory of foregrounding.By analyzing foregrounding features of linguistic choices of the novel through an empirical study, this thesis will explore the foregrounding effects produced from three aspects:semantic rhetorical devices, narrative tactics, and characterization, thus providing a means for a fuller understanding and appreciation of Mark Twain's artistic achievement.
