Literature is an art of language. At the core of literary language is literariness, which mainly arises from foregrounding. When translating a literary work, the translator should not only convey its original content, but also identify its distinctive language expressions and their functions and then reproduces in the target text the foregrounding effects in the source text.Foregrounding is abundantly available in"Children's Story" and has an impact on its character portrayal, emotional appeal and thematic concerns of the work. This thesis, with the translation of the short story"Children's Story" as an example, attempts to explore linguistic foregrounding in fictional translation from the perspective of literary stylistics. This thesis first analyzes the feasibility of applying literary stylistics to the reproduction of foregrounded language.Secondly, based on the existing research and the characteristics of "Children's Story",the present thesis focuses on both quantitative foregrounding and qualitative foregrounding,so as to investigate how to reproduce the meaning and stylistic style of the foregrounded language in translation.Thirdly,it discusses the application of literary stylistics to foregrounding translation through analyzing specific examples of translation. The study has found that foregrounded language embodies the style of literary works;therefore, its translation quality directly affects how the aesthetic value of the original work is represented. It is argued that literary stylistics helps identify the meanings and language styles of foregrounding and enables one to adopt several translation techniques and methods so as to achieve stylistic values and foregrounding effects of the source text.In order to reproduce in the target text various quantitative foregrounding effects, language features and syntactic structures of the source text are recommended to be preserved. As for qualitative foregrounding, the translator should understand lexical polysemy, identify sentence relations correctly, imitate the rhetorical devices dynamically and reproduce the narrative perspectives faithfully. When it is difficult to satisfy both form and meaning in translation, the translator can resort to creative translation, adaptation and compensation through functional equivalence.
