Ethel Lilian Voynich, a novelist and musician, was born in Ireland in 1864 and died in 1960. She was most famous for her novel The Gadfly, first published in 1897 in the United States and then in Britain, about the struggles of an international revolutionary in Italy. Though the writer was almost forgotten in the English world, yet she enjoyed a high prestige in both China and Soviet Union. The earliest translation of The Gadfly in China could date back to the beginning of the 1950s when many novels were seen as ideologically useful, and the new translated versions appear in recent years. The process of the translation of The Gadfly has undergone great changes from the 1950s to the new century. The study on the whole process of The Gadfly's, translation could help to understand the formation of the cannons of translation literature and how a number of factors in the target language affect the literary translation. Based on the media-translatology, this paper will analyze the influence of the ideology on the different translated versions of The Gadfly in different periods from the perspective of the poly-system theory. Then the writer of the paper will try to discuss the enlightenment of this case study on the media-translatology.This paper is composed of four chapters. The first chapter is focused on the introduction of the writer Ethel Lilian Voynich and her works in different periods. The second chapter will discuss the history of the translation of the novel The Gadfly and the study on it. The third chapter of the paper will, based on the media-translatology, analyze the effects of the ideology in different periods on the translation of The Gadfly in order to showcase the effects of the culture in the target language on the translation. The last chapter of the paper is to explore the enlightenments of the case study of the novel on the media-translatology.
