Liang Shiqiu is the first to personally translate the Collected Works of Shakespeare as well as 15 other literary masterpieces and his translation is renowned for its smoothness and faithfulness. However, due to some historical biases, Liang Shiqiu as a translator was precluded from the focus of translation study in the mainland of china. Only in the past twenty years, a collection of scholars in china started to be interested in the case study of Liang Shiqiu and his translated works. But those studies were either confined to Liang's debate with Lu Xun, or just taken as an affiliated part of the study of Shakespeare; even though some scholars did study Liang Shiqiu as a translator, they namely accentuate translation strategy, translation perspectives, and translator's selection of the original text. And the focus was mainly on"what"rather than"how"and"why".This thesis is intended to offer a framework of translator study. It is supposed that translator study is conducted in a four-factor structure including motive of translation, selection of a original text or one type of translation, selection of translation strategy, and acceptance of translation product. The thesis centers on four parts: Liang's translation motive manipulated by his multi-identity, Liang's selection of Shakespeare as the source text and the underlying reasons for the selection, Liang's selection of translation strategy and the manipulating factors, and the social acceptance of Liang's translation. The thesis adopts AndréLefevere's Three Factor Theory as the tool of analysis, and focuses on how and why Liang Shiqiu as a translator was manipulated rather than how a source text was manipulated. The study follows a descriptive-analytic procedure.
