Discussion On Historical Achievements Of Hui Historian Yang Zhijiu

Mr. Yang Zhijiu (1915-2002), the Hui nationality, is a well-known historian of contemporary China. Mr. Yang's academic and research involve History of the Yuan Dynasty, History of China-Western communication, History of the Sui and Tang Dynasties and many other areas. Mr. Yang has made great academic achievements which has attracted extensive attention and been commended by Chinese and foreign historians. Both Mr. Yang's prominent historical achievements and his profound historical thought deserve our further study.Based on Mr.Yang's personal writings and interrelated scholars' research papers, this thesis comprehensively try to compile Mr. Yang's writings and academic achievements, discuss Mr. Yang's history thinking, and objectively assess Mr. Yang's historical achievements.This thesis consists of the following three parts: Introduction, Text (three chapters) and Conclusion.Introduction: In order to make the subject and the discussion based on more explicit and rational basis, we briefly reviewed current academic research concerning Mr. Yang, introduced the causes, topics of research ideas, as well as methods, sources and materials of this thesis.Chapterâ… : To expound Mr. Yang's achievements on history of the Yuan Dynasty. In this area, studies on the history of the Hui of the Yuan Dynasty and the Yuan Dynasty Tan Ma Chi Jun were the most representative. As a Hui scholar, Mr. Yang's academic research began from the history of the Hui of Yuan Dynasty, which was the starting point of his entire history practice and his life-long study subject. His early research was mainly focused on name, origin and formation of the Hui nationality. In addition, Mr. Yang also studied characters and political life, popular culture and religious culture of the Hui of Yuan Dynasty. Having been published "History of the Hui of Yuan Dynasty" was Mr. Yang's 60 years conclusive writing on the Hui of Yuan Dynasty. Mr. Yang also made series studies on one of the army of the Yuan Dynasty Tan Ma Chi Jun, discussed the derivation, semantics, composition, nature and role of Tan Ma Chi Jun. This study promoted the further development of this area.Chapterâ…¡: To discuss Mr. Yang's research results on the field of China-Western communication. Mr. Yang's research in this area was mainly concentrated in Marco Polo in China and his "Travel Notes". Mr. Yang had found reliable historical data on Marco Polo in China from history books when he was a graduate student, from which he testified that Marco Polo really had come to China, and revised that the time Marco Polo leaving China was in early 1291. After that, faced with many doubts about "whether Marco Polo had come to China ", Mr. Yang wrote lots of papers to refuted challengers. These controversies promote the issue of the 'Marco Polo came to China' to a new level in the international scope. Mr. Yang had also been recognized as the authority of Marco Polo.Chapterâ…¢: To discusse Mr. Yang's achievements on the history of the Sui and Tang Dynasties. The history of the Sui and Tang Dynasties was also an important study area in Mr. Yang's academic career. He had successively published "Outline History of Five Dynasties and the Sui and Tang Dynasties" and "Popular History of the Sui and Tang Dynasties speech". He had also bee recruited as the general editor of the "Dictionary of Chinese history" and the sub-editor of Volume of "History of Five Dynasties and the Sui and Tang Dynasties". In addition, Mr. Yang wrote numerous papers on History of the Sui and Tang Dynasties, which mainly focused on the Chieh-tu Shih separatist problem in the late of Tang Dynasty. These writings on the study of the history of the Sui and Tang dynasties had made great contributions to the academic community, and had also been widely recognized and praised.Conclusion: To summarize Mr. Yang's research methods and historical thought, to evaluate their status and roles in academic history.
