Ideological Research On Tang Junyi's Reconstruction Of Humanism

Tang Junyi,a famous modem Chinese philosopher,is an outstanding representative of the second-generation of Neo-Confucianism.He is also on a par with Mu Zongsan and Xu fuguan.Tang Junyi has produced massive pieces of works,during which he especially emphasizes on the reconstruction of modem humanism.In his opinion,humanism is what human cultural spirit longs for.While culture means to convert humanism into sincerity,and it is a wide cultural concept.Therefore, the humanism Tang Junyi defines can be referred to the pursuit of a combination of all human cultural spiritual value.This definition is pretty broad in contents,because Tang Junyi has covered all the ideology of human pursuit of spiritual value.While in terms of characteristics,it mainly reflects on the roots of Confucian thoughts and mental heritage,the pursuit of perfect inwardness and the shape of ideal personality,and to think global and absorb foreign essences.In his opinion,humanism is what human cultural spirit longs for.While culture means to convert humanism into sincerity,and it is a wide cultural concept.Therefore, the humanism Tang Junyi defines can be referred to the pursuit of a combination of all human cultural spiritual value.This definition is pretty broad in contents,because Tang Junyi has covered all the ideology of human pursuit of spiritual value.While in terms of characteristics,it mainly reflects on the roots of Confucian thoughts and mental heritage,the pursuit of perfect inwardness and the shape of ideal personality,and to think global and absorb foreign essences.The systematically comparative research on Chinese and Western cultures is the basic premise of Tang Junyi's reconstruction of humanism.He divides the Chinese and Western cultures into three stages:ancient,medieval and modern,and compares each other respectively.Then he has found three unique advantages of Western culture.First it has the transcending spirit from upward to outward;second,it has the scientific spirit of "Charge Objectivity";third,it respects free individual spirit;forth,it advocates the multi-development of academy and culture.Tang Junyi thinks that the Western culture's advantages are what the Chinese culture is lacking of.If we want to reconstruct the modern humanism,in his opinion,what comes first is our attitudes toward Chinese and Western traditional cultures.He opposes to the attitude that advocates Western culture while denying Chinese culture,or the attitude that looks down upon Western culture and neglects its advantages.In his view,we should face the Western culture straightly,then can we benefit from each other.The basic method of reconstruction of modern humanism is also a fundamental question to which Tang Junyi attaches great importance.First,he claims that we should follow Hegel's negative and positive formula,and add the anti-title "Objective Spirit",which is what Chinese traditional culture lacks.Then he thinks we should trace the roots of Western culture,seek the confluence of Chinese and Western cultures,then can we really achieve the integration of Chinese and Western cultures and reconstruct modern humanism.Although Tang Junyi's idea of reconstructing the humanism has limitations of itself and of the times,his research on the modernization of Chinese culture has positive theoretical and practical meanings.
