As one of the most important mass communications, news has become an indispensable part of human's life.It serves as an effective device to learn the outside world.People can obtain a variety of journalistic materials from different means.Meanwhile, journalistic English, the carrier of news, plays an important role in reporting the news content and reflecting the attitude of the media towards the news event. Therefore, more and more attention is directed to the study of journalistic English.Entertainment news is one of the journalistic forms that we often encounter in our daily life. With its lively and relaxing style and its prompt and vivid account, entertainment news has been welcomed by millions of readers and thus has become an indispensable part of readers'news reading list. However, compared with other sub-varieties of news, entertainment news has not enjoyed its due attention. No works concerning a systematic and comprehensive analysis of its stylistic features could be found in the linguistic circle. As a sub-variety of the language of journalism, journalistic English for entertainment has its unique features due to its field, mode and tenor of discourse. On the basis of functional-stylistic theory of foregrounding, the present thesis aims to analyze the foregrounded stylistic features of journalistic English for entertainment at different linguistic levels. The thesis consists of five chapters. In the opening chapter, the general introduction of the whole thesis is presented, including the topic of the study, the purpose and significance of the study, methodology and data collection, and the organization of the thesis.Chapter two is the literature review part. Both the studies on journalistic English and functional stylistics are provided in this chapter. The feasibility and necessity of the present study is also pointed out in this part.Chapter three makes a systematic elaboration of foregrounding theory, which displays the theoretical basis for this thesis. An examination of various views on style is presented at first. After that, the development of the concept of foregrounding, elements to motivate foregrounding and classification of foregrounding are expounded comprehensively.Chapter four,as the backbone of the whole thesis, presents an analysis of the foregrounded stylistic features of journalistic English for entertainment at different linguistic levels.Foregrounding at the graphological level is achieved through the deviant use of punctuations and the manipulation of the type of print.Alliteration and rhyme help to fulfill phonological foregrounding. At the lexical level, reporters use neologisms, abbreviation, acronyms, blending, loan words and sense-shift to attain foregrounding, and the frequent use of short words and colloquial words also function. Syntactic foregrounded features are embodied in the adoption of ellipsis and the peculiar use of tense, and also the frequent use of expanded simple sentences, active voice, quotations and repetition.Foregrounding at the semantic level lies in the employment of a number of rhetorical devices,i.e.,simile,metaphor,synecdoche,metonymy,personification and pun.Chapter five serves as the conclusion part,in which the summary of the thesis, the limitations of the study as well as suggestions for further study are presented in this chapter. In summary, throughout the study,we try to make a systematic and comprehensive functional stylistic analysis of journalistic English for entertainment. It is hoped that the present study can help newspaper readers to better appreciate entertainment news, and also shed some pedagogical light on the writing of entertainment news reporting.
