Nowadays, the mass media of communication which includes newspapers and periodicals, movie and TV, as well as internet is the main source from which people obtain information. We almost contact media everyday, from the change of the world or the rise and fall of the nation to the neighbor's suffering from burglary or the lost dog, by means of watching television and listening to the radio, or reading newspaper and magazine, or surfing the internet. The media has become the optimal carrier of getting information and spreading information, and it also provides much town talk for our leisure time. As one of the most important media of mass communication, news has become an indispensable part of our daily life. It serves as an effective channel for us to communicate with the outer world, and we can gain the news coverage from every part of the world through all kinds of ways in short time.In the era of rapid development of modern science and technology, with the growth of information communication, the collaboration and cooperation among different countries is also increasing. Thus, journalistic English, as the carrier of news, plays more and more significant role in reporting the news content and reflecting the attitude of the media towards the news event and is paid more and more attention. Journalistic English, which is applied to the news reports on journals, broadcast, TV and internet, is one of widely used styles in modern English and is one of the standards of regulating English language as well. Journalistic English, as an applied language, has been separated from common English due to its uniqueness and it also differs much from common English in the aspects of wording and phrasing. In other words, it is different from literary creation or general composition writing, stressing to use objective and impartial, popular and easy-to-understand language instead of flowery language. Hence, it is a special variety of language material with distinctive language form and stylistic features. As a sub-variety of journalistic English, entertainment news is one of regular news forms. The entertainment news, with its lively, vivid and interesting style and its prompt and timely account for current entertainment event, has attracted numerous readers'attention and has become an absolutely necessary part of readers'favorite news reading list. However, compared with other sub-varieties of news, entertainment news has not enjoyed its due attention. Moreover, no works concerning a comprehensive analysis of its stylistic features could be found in the linguistic circle. Besides, the stylistic comparison and analysis of English entertainment news published in non-English speaking countries and that published in English-speaking countries is even rarely seen in the academic field. With the expanding of international exchange and general application of English, now English journals are published in many countries. As an English-speaking country, America has published a lot of newspapers and periodicals that are tremendously popular with readers around the world, such as Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, New York Post and USA Today, etc. Although China is not an English-speaking country, we also publish our own English newspapers and magazines, such as China Daily,21st Century, Beijing Review, Shanghai Daily and Shanghai Star, etc. Presently, many newspapers bear entertainment edition, hence more and more entertainment news reporting is released. Though these entertainment news reports are all written in English, when readers read these entertainment news reports, they may feel that these entertainment news reports are more or less similar in style, but some differences also exist between Chinese newspapers and American newspapers. Therefore, it is necessary for readers to know what are the similarities and differences of different English entertainment news reports and how to explain these similarities and differences. The present thesis is mainly on the stylistic comparison and analysis between Chinese English entertainment news and American English entertainment news, thus two groups of English newspapers are selected. All the English news material is collected from the official websites of the two groups of English newspapers, including China Daily,21st Century, and Global Times published in China, and Los Angeles Times, New York Times, and USA Today published in America. The two groups of English newspapers are very influential and have large circulation in China and in America respectively. Through several months'collecting and sampling,20 pieces of news reports are selected as samples from the two groups of English newspapers. With reference to the theories of modern stylistics, the comparison and analysis of stylistic features between the two groups of English news material is made on the basis of linguistic description in terms of graphological level, lexical level, syntactic level and textual level. The results of the comparison and analysis show that the stylistic features of entertainment news reports in the two groups of English newspapers are similar if they are seen from a macro-perspective, but some differences also exist if they are judged from a micro-perspective.The present thesis consists of five chapters.
