News, as one of the most important mass media, has become an inevitable part ofpeoples’ life, which is also an effective way to know the outside world. We can obtain avariety of journalistic materials via different ways. Meanwhile, as the carrier of journalism, journalistic English plays a significant role in news reports as well as the attitudes reflected onthe news events by the reports. Since the appearance of foregrounding theory, most scholarsfrom home and abroad prefer to pay attention to the appliance of foregrounding theory on theliterary critics, while the research on the journalistic translation is seldom mentioned. The concept of foregrounding was applied to the literature first by the pre-war PragueSchool linguists and literary critics, such as Mukarovsky, to refer to the unexpecteddepartures from the accepted norms. Mukarovsky believed that the conventional words makedaily language automotive and habitualzed, which weaken the sense of beauty in languageitself. In order to break the norm, foregrounding is to create oddness and to achievedefamiliarization. Halliday gave the definition of foregrounding as "prominence that ismotivated”. Although the foregrounding words do not belong to the standard language, it iscommon existing still for the foregrounding effects are serving for intercommunication. It iswith this deviation that the language can arise more attention from the public and offer themthe sense of freshness, surprise and unfamiliarness. According to the categorization ofdeviation by Geoffrey Leech, this thesis gave an analysis on the journalistic English. Besides, this research provided a series of actual samples to prove the foregrounding theory applied inthe journalistic English so as to offer the translators or people interested in this field somesuggestions and guidance on journalistic English.
