The Southern Song Dynasty was a developing peak of the Neo-Confucianism of the Song and Ming Dynasties which appeared some famous Confucian scholars like Zhu Xi,Lv Zuqian,Lu Jiuyuan as well as Chen Liang who was a coeval well-known Utilitarian School ideologist.Chen Liang developed the Chinese traditional utilitarianism thought,initiated the utilitarianism thought and animadverted the Confucian scholars like Zhu Xi as 'He who flatters himself that he was a sincerity and integrity scholar,actually was dishonest and impractical.' and also criticized their moral-first pure saint-style.Chen Liang's thought had distinctive characteristics of utilitarianism and showed his distinctive academic thought and unique academic style.Chen Liang's Utility thought,particularly on the culturing aspect was more unique.Upholding Confucianism's classic behavior's principle that 'keep your family in order,govern the state effectively and bring peace to the world',against the pure Confucianism's style of study that 'Unknowing the Utility' and 'Unknowing situation',Chen Liang and Zhu Xi had a Distinction 'Yi' and 'Li' of Confucianism.He brought forward the proposition of Practice of both Righteousness and Benefit and emphasized practical use and took utility as morals.Chen Liang believed that 'Learning is used for practicing and moral-only is useless.' and he tried to release people from the style of study that talking profusely about 'Only theory and no utility',and become 'Hero' who has 'The ability and virtue are both good;wisdom,courage,humanity and justice all possess,and could do pioneering work and save the world.'From a moral culturing point of view,the paper is aiming at demonstrating Chen Liang's thought about the culture norms and means of 'ceremonies reflect the orderly distinctions(in the operations of) heaven','reducing the desire and evil' and 'Staying realistic and pragmatic'.Making an all-round survey of Chen Liang's moral culturing thought,it is not only be helpful for us to deeply understand Chen Liang's moral culturing system,but also helps us to understand the developing process of the ethical and moral thought in the Southern Song Dynasty. The paper is divided into four parts:The first part discusses the social and cultural background of Chen Liang's moral cultivation.Chen Liang lived in the Southern Song Dynasty which was with serious social crisis and ethnic conflicts.When Chen Liang was young,he was full of ambitions and concerned about national affairs.Facing the country with civil and outside worries,he was willing to save it with his knowledge.His thought was originally influenced by the traditional Confucian culture,but also influenced by Zhe Dong Utilitarian School,forming his own thought with the characteristics combining taking rites as basis and utility.The second part discusses Chen Liang's moral cultivation's forming theoretical basis. 'Thoughts used in daily life' is the basis of Chen Liang's thought and human nature is the moral basis of his moral cultivation.'Practice of both Righteousness and Benefit' is the prominent feature of his moral cultivation.The third part focuses on the basic contents of Chen Liang's theory of moral cultivation. From the angles of moral cultivation's principle,method and the training goal,this part tries to analyze on four aspects such as ceremonies reflect the orderly distinctions(in the operations of) heaven','reducing the desire and evil','Staying realistic and pragmatic' and 'studying for practising'.The fourth part focuses on the history value and he realistic significance of Chen Liang's moral cultivation.This part mainly analyzes its historical significances and limitations,and discusses the realistic significances of Chen Liang's practical use moral cultivation.Chen Liang's moral cultivation was forming in a specific social and cultural background, and on the basis of propounding Confucianism.However,his thought profundity and theoretical framework surpassed the scope of the traditional Confucianism in some degree and had his own theory features.Though it had some historical and theoretical limitations,Chen Liang's thoughts had his own features and values from the view of thought field in the Southern Song Dynasty and even whole traditional society. |
