The American anthropologist Gary Palmer proposed a theory of cultural linguistics. He enriched the three traditions of linguistic anthropology: Boasian linguistics, ethno semantics, and ethnography of speaking, and applied cognitive linguistics directly to the three traditional approaches of linguistic anthropology, which has proved a better approach to explain the linguistic phenomenon and problems--cultural linguistics. The most distinguished feature of this approach is that it has laid emphasis on image and takes image as one of the key concepts of cultural linguistics. Cultural linguistics,by its very essence, is a theory about mental image. Here Palmer refers image not only to visual images, but also the images we get from all our perceptual organs . Palmer emphasized that images are based on experience. Nearly all images are structured by culture and personal history. Image has close relationship with language and culture. Palmer seeks to understand how speakers deploy speech and listeners understand it through kinds of images. He tries to study the thinking mode of different language users of different cultures by the image. His theory has an innovative significance to the image reactualization in the translation of Chinese pastoral poetry.Chinese pastoral poetry has a long history and it plays an important part in Chinese poetry. Translating it into English has great significance for eastern and western culture communications. The Tang Dynasty has reached the peak of Chinese pastoral poetry. Wang Wei and Meng Haroran are the two most brilliant representatives of Chinese pastoral poetry in Tang Dynasty. This thesis makes a tentative research on the comparative study of Wang Wei and Meng Haoran's pastoral poetry and its English versions, and discusses the image reactualization from the perspective of cultural linguistics. Hoping it will be constructive on the English translation of Chinese pastoral poetry and the appreciation of its English versions so that to better promote the eastern and western culture communications and mutual understanding.
