Abstract: Cultural Linguistics is proposed by the American anthropologist Gary Palmer.His theory enriched and developed the three traditions of linguistic anthropology:Boasian linguistics, ethno semantics, and ethnography of speaking. Cultural Linguisticsdirectly merges cognitive linguistics into there traditional approaches of linguisticanthropology and it is certainly a better method to explain and persuade the linguisticphenomenon and problems in cultural linguistics.Emphasizing image is the most obvious feature of cultural linguistics, at the sametime, it refers image to one of the major concepts of cultural linguistics. Actuallycultural linguistics is a theory which research mental image. Here Palmer thinks thatimage refers not only to visual image, but also the image which comes from all ourperceptual organs. Palmer stresses that image are based on experience. Nearly allimages are created by culture and society. Image has intimate connection with languageand culture. Palmer attempts to comprehend the ways speakers deploy speech and byvarious images. He is determined to hart to study the thinking mode which is created byvarious language users of different cultures by the image. His theory produces aninnovative significance and influence to the image reactulization in the translation ofChinese frontier fortress poetry.Chinese frontier fortress poetry has a long history and it plays a significant role inChinese poetry. Chinese-English translation plays an important role in eastern andwestern culture communications. The Tang Dynasty is the peak of Chinese frontierfortress poetry. Two most famous representatives of Chinese frontier fortress poetry inTang Dynasty are Wang changling and Cen can. This paper seeks to make a tentativeresearch on the comparative study of Wang changling and Cen can’s frontier fortresspoetry and their different English versions. The aim of the paper discusses the imagereactualization from the perspective of cultural linguistics. The paper wants to expressinnovative features on the English translation of Chinese frontier fortress poetry andbeauty and value of its English versions in order to advance the eastern and westernculture communications and mutual understanding very well.The whole paper is divided into six parts. The first part is introduction. It mainlyintroduces the research background of the paper, purpose of thesis and structure of thesis. The second part to the fifth part is the main body of the paper. The second part isabout the theoretical basis of Palmer cultural linguistics and respectively interprets theevolution of the Palmer’s cultural linguistics, central concept in Palmer’s culturallinguistics: Image, central concept in Palmer’s cultural linguistics images reactualizationin translation process and image translation’s implications from the perspective ofPalmer’s cultural linguistics. It is on the basis of linguistics anthropology and combinescognitive linguistics, so it produces a new theory: cultural linguistics. The third part istheory on frontier fortress in Tang dynasty. It includes the introduction of frontierfortress in Tang dynasty and its characteristics. Next it writes two famous andrepresentative poets Cen can and Wang changling and the core of their frontier fortresspoems, the differences of images and similarities between Cen can and Wangchangling’s poems. The forth and fifth part are the most important part. The forth partwrites the image reactualization in the English version of Wang changling and Cen can’sfrontier fortress poetry and analysis from three aspects, namely: patriotic feelings,frontier fortress scenery and quite and peaceful life. The paper chooses many poems oftwo poets. The fifth part analysis the principles and strategies of image translation infrontier fortress poems of Tang Dynasty by the perspective of Palmer’s culturallinguistics. It combines the translation and Palmer cultural linguistics and shows theimage reactulization from semantic level and aesthetic level. The last part is conclusion.It concludes the paper.
