Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) was one of the greatest French impressionist composers in the late19th and early 20th centuries. He was generally recognized as the comprehensive synthesist of impressionist music, together with Debussy, the local composer. As the successor of Debussy, the most excellent representative of impressionism, Ravel expanded further the creation techniques of impressionist music, and he also integrated the French national music features and Spanish national music features into music creation. Compared with Debussy, Ravel puts more emphasis on the description of the objective impression and he attaches more importance to the relation with tradition. He was actually making innovation actively on the basis of inheriting tradition. Therefore he formed his own unique composition style and engendered great influence on the development of the complex modern music of 20th century. The paper takes Ravel's piano suite of his early representative, Mirror, as example and takes its techniques of harmony as the research object. It is based on the related research results of Ravel's music and it uses some theoretical knowledge such as musical morphology and musical creation science. The paper, using the method of concluding and summarizing, explores Ravel's early unique impressionist music and techniques of harmony through the thorough research of mode, tonality, chord structure form and harmonic progression. This lays a solid basis for the further study of the features of Ravel's harmonic creation style. The paper is divided into four parts:Chapter One Ravel's Life and the Main Features of His Musical Creation. This chapter introduces first Ravel's life and his major works, then the main features of his musical creation.Chapter Two Summary of the Piano Suite Mirror This chapter first the creation background of the music and its genre features. Then it analyzes the music on the whole and gets its general picture from a macroscopic angle.Chapter Three Techniques of Harmony of the Piano Suite Mirror This is the main body of the whole paper. It analyzes in detail the features of the techniques of harmony of Mirror from mode (church mode, Spanish mode, pentatonic mode, full tone mode, the same tonic mode alternating), tonality (classical tonality, melodic tonality, sustainable tonality, tonality layout), chord structure form (tertian chords, non-tertian chords, compound harmony) and harmony progression form (relation of intervals root progression, mode harmonic progression, parallel progression). Conclusion This part, on the basis of the former analyze, concludes the unique features of the impressionist techniques of harmony of the piano suite Mirror from the four aspects. It also elaborates on the theoretical value and deeply influence of the musical work.
